Kazakhstan’s Mikhail Shaidorov has taken the gold medal in the men’s figure skating event at the 2026 Winter Olympics, in a major upset that saw heavy favourite Ilia Malinin of the USA finish in eighth place.
Shaidorov, who is 21 years old, capitalized on Malinin’s mistakes, which included two falls during his free skate routine, to claim the top spot on the podium.
The dramatic turn of events will now see Shaidorov return home as a gold medalist, capping off a remarkable performance that will be remembered as one of the biggest shocks of the 2026 Winter Olympics so far.
